Barcelona: La Vida Literaria (1903?). 95pp. Six issues of a series dedicated to an assortment of pseudo-scientific examinations of sexual subjects. In addition to explanations of the causes of impotency, uses of aphrodisiacs, prohibited sexual positions and problems associated with celibacy, two issues include an extensive analysis of homosexuality: "diferencias entre el pederasta y el homosexual.-el amor homosexual en Francia- una practica repugnante de los Templarios-la pederasta en Turquia....sodomia en Italia, China....un defensor de los pederastas." Generally very good in lightly worn wrappers, some browning to covers. The series resembles that produced in Paris around the same time by the Librairie des connaissances médicales. More
Paris: En vente chez tous les libraires [Jules Eugène Gauché and Angélina Leboucher].1911]. The quite rare first edition of this gay erotic novel, bound with Ludovic ou Le Prédestiné à la Pédérastie. The story revolves around the homosexual dalliances of Max Brégantier and includes graphic depictions of orgies and "messe noires." reminscent of Jacques Fersen's scandalous sexual imbroglios some years before. Amsterdam and Paris: Aux depens d'une Socièté d'Amateurs [Marcel Seheur]. (1936). This uncommon and controversial text on pederasty bears an introduction by "Bramatos." The illustrations however are missing in this copy. Pia 12. One of 250 hand numbered copies, this example #26. Very good in original salmon colored wrappers and contemporary 3/4 leather binding. Amsterdam: F. van Rossen (1908). 78pp. Aletrino was a prolific Dutch writer and a lecturer on criminal anthropology in Amsterdam and was one of the earliest Dutch advocates of homosexual rights, widely respected in his field. In 1903 he visited Magnus Hirschfeld in Berlin and discusses his observations in Hermaphrodisie en uranisme. See Bleys, The Geography of Perversion: Male-To-Male Sexual Behavior Outside the West. Paris : Eugène Figuière (1925). 325pp. The first and only novel by the French author, printed in an edition of 200 numbered copies (#120). The novel explores themes of same-sex desire and was featured and reviewed in Adolf Brand's Der Eigene—the world's first journal focused on homosexual culture. Suppressed for its subject matter, it remains a rare example of gay literature of the period. Very good in 3/4 morocco boards, marbled endpapers, raised bands, original wrappers present, top edge gilt. More
Paris: C. Carrington, Paris (1906). 270pp. Quite uncommon book published by Carrington, (1867–1921) the leading British publisher of erotica in late-19th- and early-20th-century Europe. Very good in original pale yellow wrappers, pages uncut. One chapter is entitled "femmes et bicyclettes." More
New York: Anderson Galleries (6,7 December 1920). Interestingly, this is likely the first known auction record for a copy of Edward Prime Stevenson's (Xavier Mayne) Imre: A Memorandum. The cataloguer notes the book is "very rare" and is bound with a number of other works by George Barlow and Francis Swiney. Also included are a number of important works, including works by Edward Carpenter and John Addington Symonds. Very good in wrappers, light loss to spine. More
Paris: Dorbon-Ainé (1916). Wartime memoir written by the British born celebrity chef. Secretary to Henri Gauthier-Villars (who called him "a little swindler and a huge homosexual") he wrote a number of books on cookery and contributed to Jacques Fersen's Akademos (see Sidney Place below). Privately printed edition of 300 copies (#48), this example without the etchings by Laboureur. Very good in decorative covers, spine a bit worn and chipped, light fading. More
According to the title page this is "the story of a rich but girlish young gentleman under the control of his pretty step-sister and her aunt: written by himself at his step-sister's order, with an account of his punishments, the dresses he was made to wear, his final subjection and his curious fate." The book, quite uncommon, was subsequently translated into French in an illustrated edition. The author is unknown, but the work has been attributed to "Sir. O.T., Esq." by the French translator, Bernard Valonnes. A very good copy in 3/4 leather boards, top edge gilt, original blue wrappers and spine preserved. Bookplate with erased signature on front paste down. More

Paris (1939). An issue of the bi-monthly libertarian newspaper, edited by E. Armand (pen name of Lucien-Ernest June) that advocated for sexual freedom. Contributors included Eugène Bizeau, Madeleine Pelletier and Han Ryner. Included in this issue is a sympathetic article by Jean Boileau entitled "Notes pour une étude sur l'uranisme." Covers a bit yellowed, but otherwise good. More

Piersons Verlag (1901). 161pp. An early German novel with a strong undercurrent of homosexuality, wherein the protagonist strives for "high ideals" and exaggeratedly rejects females "before it degenerates into unnatural passion." Baron Baillou published several books on esthetics and philosophy, but is largely unknown. Good in contemporary marbled boards, wear and short tears to linen spine. Quite rare. More
Bergamo: Lubrina (1997). 295pp. The first Italian translation of this gay classic, originally published in Danish in 1904 and later adapted to film and the stage. Much admired by Thomas Mann and Alfred Hitchcock the 1924 film is considered an important early work in gay silent cinema. Brilliantly illustrated by Mirando Haz, this is one of 200 special signed and numbered copies with an original signed etching by the illustrator. Near fine in paper slipcase. More

The artist, a bi-sexual Englishman, was one of the more prominent purveyors of nude male magazines and photographs in the post-war period, some of which earned him time in prison. He published magazines such as "Man to Man" and "Golden Boys" and assorted others, but he also self-published several books with more serious allusions, such as the "Superb Youth," series which attempt to cross the line into more conventional "artist's books." Notwithstanding this pretense, the books contain a wealth of well-endowed and quite attractive young men in assorted provocative poses. This profile portrait on “scraper board” measures 15.25” x 12”, signed “JB ’59” at lower left, a few light surface cracks. More

Boston [c. 1966]. 179pp. 4to. Published in 1966, A Queer Kind of Death by George Baxt is widely recognized as a landmark in the mystery genre for its groundbreaking representation of LGBTQ+ and Black characters. The novel was critically acclaimed for its honest portrayal of LGBTQ characters and situations. This is the author's working carbon copy, annotated by him throughout. Inscribed by Baxt on the title-leaf to Otto Penzler: "Dear Otto!/the best + many/thanks to you and/Caroline-/George Baxt/This is my working/copy - top copy at/Boston University - /GB". Additionally, Baxt has crossed out the original title ( Dead Cat) and has hand-printed the final title, and has written "Final/title!!" beneath it. Text on rectos only. The first few and final few leaves have marginal chipping and short tears, paper-clip markings on the title-leaf. Some occasional creasing and thumb-soiling. Housed in a lightly worn custom chemise and slipcase. More
