Pen and ink drawing of standing man

An accomplished pen and ink drawing of a standing man, inscribed at lower left. Old paper mount, notations on verso (6 3/4" x 10"). Old crease running laterally- likely folded at an early date. The inscription reads: "Souvenir de la Salle de Police/ 14 juillet 1878/ E.V. (?)" The date on the image was Bastille Day, although it wasn't yet declared an official holiday and the Universal Exhibition was also underway at the time. The artwork appears to depict a soldier or official detained in a guardroom or detention room, perhaps. Light age-toning to paper, but in very good condition. Ex-collection Ralph Baumgarten, Paris.
