Huey Newton for U.S. Congress poster
NP: [1968].
Item #9181
Newton ran this congressional campaign from prison. This poster urges voters to "Defend the Black Community and the People's Human Rights" and concludes "All Power to All the People, Black Power to Black People." The photograph was taken by Kenneth Green of the Oakland Tribune at a 1967 rally in Richmond, CA, and was the first widely circulated official Panther image of Newton.
Newton articulated a significantly "gay-friendly" and supportive stance in a 1970 essay "Letter to the Revolutionary Brothers and Sisters About the Women's Liberation and Gay Liberation Movements," Newton urged solidarity, argued against homophobic language, and stated that gay people were oppressed and could be revolutionary allies. He famously wrote "homosexuals... might be the most oppressed people in... society".
