Originally published in the January 1939 issue of The Criterion under the title "A nation which does not feed its best writers is a mere barbarian dung-heap", the essay is issued here in an exuberant typographical masterpiece which uses a variety of typefaces and inks to convey Crevel's surrealistic genius. One of 135 copies (#93) signed by the publisher, Michael Caine. Two signed color woodcuts included in the text. Very good in original painted wrappers.
