Paris, A. Savine (1890). 295pp. The novel based upon the author's experiences in a French prison camp in Tunisia, which has been described as "'the most effective indictment of the French colonial army written in the nineteenth century.' Darien chronicles the lives of men caught up in the system and deals compassionately with the subject of homosexuality in the army. Never a member of the literary elite in France, he was much admired by the Symbolists and wrote a number of political tracts and was considered an anarchist. The novel was adapted to the stage and later film and has remained a classic since its publication.This is the first edition of the book, quite rare in commerce. Very good in limp maroon leather boards, original wrappers present, inked stamp of the Collège de ’Pataphysique on endpaper, along with the inked ownership stamp of Emmanuel Peillet, one of the founders of the Collège. More

Barcelona: Pons (1867). 310pp. 3rd. ed. A compendium of every conceivable sin relative to sex, written for the use of priests in dealing with their errant flocks. The treatise on church doctrine includes great detail relative to the variations of sexual improprieties, including bestiality, sodomy, pederasty, masturbation (with extensive discussion of the details of this vice). A fair copy in original boards, extensive browning throughout, front hing cracked, signature and stamps on title page. Uncommon. More
Paris: Heugel, [1895]. 4to. Léon Delafosse (1874 – 1951) was a French composer and pianist, generally considered the model for the character of Charles Morel, a violinist portrayed in Marcel Proust's novel In Search of Lost Time. He had been an intimate in the Proust/Montesquiou circle and had his portrait painted by John Singer Sargent in The charming young pianist was nicknamed "the Angel," and was a favorite attraction at the salons of the most elite patrons of music in both Paris and London until he fell out of favor with Proust and his friends. This musical score was created at the height of his success and friendship with Montesquiou, whose poems include "Mauve" and "Baiser" (dedicated to Proust). Good in original decorative wrappers, small closed tears at edges, foxing throughout. This is the dedication copy, warmly inscribed on endpaper by Delafosse to his patron Montesquiou in December of 1894. Bound with Poème des mois, calendrier de Robert de Montesquieu, mis en musique par Raoul Brunel (Paris : A. Leduc, [1905]. The musical scores are dedicated to a number of Montesquiou's society friends, including the Comtesse Greffulhe and the Comtesse Jean de Castellane and others. More
Athènes [Brussels] (1871). Soft cover. A sympathetic and rare tract on the question of paederasty in ancient Greece, and almost the only printed document referring to the rare edition of Alcibiade fanciullo a scola. The edition is not to be found in the Bibliothèque Nationale's "Enfer." An earlier edition in 1861 was immediately condemned to destruction “as containing outrages against public morality and good morals.” One of 150 copies, this copy unnumbered. Very good in original marbled wrappers, tipped into plain white wrappers, custom slipcase. More

London, J.W. Parker and Son (1858) 8vo., 128 pp. A rare volume on the conduct of young men given to the eccentric teenage poet and Etonian, Digby Mackworth Dolben at age 14. Dolben caused considerable scandal at Eton with his exhibitionist behaviour and homosexual eccentricities He wrote homosexual verses to his contemporaries and scandalized his tutors with his behaviour. Dolben drowned at 19 and was mourned by the great Victorian poet, Gerard Manley Hopkins: “there can very seldom have happened the loss of so much beauty (in body and mind and life) ... Inscribed in 1862 to Dolben by Edward Daniel Stone, classical scholar and a schoolmaster at Eton during Dolben's tenure there. Armorial ex-libris of George Digby Scott, rector of Bray Quite rare- the first book of Dolben's library of which we are aware. Full crushed brown morocco and gilt, some wear, evidence of old tape strip removal, all edges gilt. More

(20” x 8/5”). 4pp. An unusual publication by the American dancer/poet/printer who settled in Paris in 1911 and printed a number of his own works, including this periodical espousing his philosophies. This edition also includes short works by Han Ryner, Louis Forest and an excerpt from Natalie Barney’s Pensées d'une Amazon. Very good, edges lightly darkened, folded sheet. Rare. More
Paris: Chez Ladvocat (1825). 2vols. 238pp and 225pp. 2nd ed. One of two important novels published by Duras during her lifetime (the other being Ourika) both of which deal with controversial subjects of marginalized characters and the social pressures which subvert romantic relationships. In Edouard, the story revolves around the son of a worker adopted by a nobleman who falls in love with his adopted sister. Edouard, understanding the impossibility of the misalliance joins the army and seeks death as a solider rather than pursuing the ill-faited romance. Two volumes, each bound in contemporary paper boards and leather spines, adverts at end of second volume, some light rubbing and wear to covers, occasional light spotting. The first edition was issued in a very small edition of 100 copies; this edition is the first edition in commerce. More

Three vintage still photographs from the film ¡Que viva México!, a project begun in 1930 by the Russian avant-garde director Sergei Eisenstein (1898–1948). Intended as an episodic portrayal of Mexican culture and politics from pre-Conquest civilization to the Mexican revolution, the film was was beset by difficulties and was eventually abandoned. A version of the film was eventually released in 1979 in a highly edited form. Two of these images were published in Kenneth Macpherson's Close Up film review and bear editorial markings and notations in Macpherson's hand. Paris (15 Septembre 1909). 169pp. Fersen's short-lived literary magazine courted gay writers and included a number of distinguished literary figures of the period. An uncommon example printed in a presumbably quite small edition on Japon. This copy bears the signature of Fersen's niece, the Marchesa del Castelbianco on front cover. The Marchesa was the daughter of Fersen's sister Germaine and she received the Villa Lysis as a gift from her mother after Fersen's death. Contributions by Boulestin, Peladan, Robert Scheffer, Colette and numerous others. Very good in original slightly browned covers. More
