The first edition of this three volume experimental novel about a troubled marriage. The highly regarded writer had a wide group of friends, including Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Algernon Charles Swinburne and Robert Louis Stevenson. Oscar Wilde was also an admirer: "Ah, Meredith! Who can define him? His style is chaos illumined by flashes of lightning".
Original publisher’s blue cloth decorated in black, gilt–lettered spine. Very good, light darkening to spine, light edge wear to edges, head and tale of spine. Marc–André Raffalovich's copy with his bookplates (by Austin Osman Spare) in each volume.
