Bertha: a story of love
London: Kegan Paul, Trench (1885). 59pp.
Item #7813
The Uranian poet's first published work, inspired by a homosexual love affair during the author's last year at Oxford. Much admired by John Addington Symonds, Sayle was at the center of the Uranian group for a number of years and counted Edward Carpenter, Ernest Dowson and a number of others. See d'Arch Smith, Love in Earnest @ 76-82.
Very good in mottled and lightly stained slate boards, the cover bears a gilt device by Burne-Jones, light foxing to endpapers, edges lightly bumped. Extremely rare.
Price: $1,500.00
